Hainan, Hong Kong to work closer on maritime safety

Hainan province and Hong Kong will deepen their cooperation in maritime safety and yacht entry, according to a press conference on April 12.

The two sides will ink new deals on joint maritime supervision, pollution prevention, emergency response, and rescue coordination.

The search and rescue centers in Hainan and Hong Kong have launched many joint operations over the years, said Wu Pingsheng, deputy director of the Hainan Maritime Safety Administration.

Hong Kong boasts rich experience in maritime administration and strong connections with the International Maritime Organization, Wu said. Hainan and Hong Kong will develop new cooperation methods, including exchanging visits from safety inspectors and holding maritime seminars on a regular basis.

The cooperation will also help to streamline the administrative approvals of foreign yachts, making Hainan the first province-level area to manage such entries directly. 

Entry and exit approval procedures, for example, have been simplified and the single voyage certification registration has been canceled, providing easier access for yachts from Hong Kong and Macao to Hainan province.

Hainan duty-free sales rise 29 pct in Q1

Offshore duty-free shops on China's island province of Hainan raked in 4.24 billion yuan (about 632.5 million U.S. dollars) in sales in the first quarter of this year, up 29.2 percent year on year, local customs said.

Official data showed that the duty-free shops received over 1 million customers and sold over 5.47 million items in the period, up 20.4 percent and 33.3 percent respectively over the same period of 2018.

Since December 2018, the duty-free shopping quota in Hainan was raised to 30,000 yuan per year from the previous 16,000 yuan, without limits on the number of purchases.

Hainan also opened two new offshore duty-free shops in Haikou and Qionghai in January this year, adding to the previous two in Haikou and Sanya.
